About the Program:

On My Own Time (OMOT) is an employee art competition organized and produced by North Texas Business for Culture and the Arts (NTBCA, formerly the Dallas Business Committee for the Arts) to recognize and encourage creativity, stimulate dialogue, and build team spirit among employees in the region.  The NTBCA has trademarked this program.

OMOT is a unique way for management to demonstrate both support for, and interest in, their employees’ abilities.  It builds employee morale, stimulates creativity, develops talent, and offers an outlet for interaction that is not directly business-related.  It is designed to identify, encourage, and acknowledge the talents of people who work for participating companies.  The high level of interest in the event over the past fifteen years clearly indicates that companies can use OMOT as a novel means of offering recognition to their employees.

Each participating company invites employees to exhibit art they have created “on their own time” away from the workplace. The company displays all entries at an art show at their place of business.  The artwork at each company show is judged in nine categories, each with a professional and amateur division, by professional artists. The “People’s Choice” award is determined by popular vote of all employees. The first-place winner in each category and division, and “Best of Show” winners from each company are exhibited in a region-wide NTBCA-coordinated art show at NorthPark Center.

Participation in OMOT helps companies to retain creative, quality individuals. It provides an outlet for recognition of artistic abilities, which would likely go unnoticed in the busy daily business schedule. This is an excellent way to create a cohesive team, and the recognition from this program is beneficial for employees, as well as for their companies.
